Urban Traffic Safety Conference 2012: |
Campaign 2010: Rushed Left Turn |
Campaign 2009: Real Consequences – Speed |
Registrants have a choice of two workshops:
Eric Howard
Principal, Eric Howard & Associates
The workshop will explore infrastructure, speed management and vehicle safety issues and solutions for safer intersection use in an actively interactive format. Road user behaviour, the impacts of traffic engineering activities and the role of other behavioural change measures will be reviewed. Through discussions and case studies, Howard will lead delegates in examining the demands on drivers and the importance of ensuring the road and intersection system, including the role of vehicle safety features, is forgiving in the event of any crash - where a driver makes a simple error of judgement.
Human beings make mistakes. The system should allow for this and not lead to fatal crash outcomes. How far can this thinking realistically be applied? This approach has clear implications for road engineering, speed limits and vehicle safety features and behavioural compliance with the law. Delegates will get a hands-on opportunity to develop a range of countermeasures to reduce fatal crash outcome risk at selected intersections.
This workshop will provide participants with some background and knowledge on traffic safety and a systems approach to analyzing crash contributing factors and the design, implementation and evaluation of road safety programs in general and public education campaigns in particular. The workshop will focus on outlining the theories and behavioural change models that can be used to analyze existing public education programs and develop new publicity campaigns. Evidence on the effectiveness of several road safety publicity campaigns will also be presented.
