The Capital Region Intersection Safety Partnership (CRISP), a partnership of Capital Region safety experts, is spreading another hard-hitting message to drivers and pedestrains in an effort to save lives on Capital Region roads.
On Tuesday, November 6th, 2007, The Capital Region Intersection Safety Partnership (CRISP) launched their fall pedestrian and driver safety campaign. The goal of the campaign is to educate pedestrians and drivers to practice sharing the road, and the responsibility of both parties to be aware and look out for each other.
“The campaign is not only asking drivers to pay attention and watch out for pedestrians but it also targets pedestrians and reminds them that even though they have the right of way, they need to exercise caution and be alert when crossing roads,” says Guy Boston, Chair of CRISP.
Understand the Impact – It Won’t Kill to Pay Attention at Intersections - the theme for this year’s campaign highlights the impact of a collision, focusing on the physical, mental, emotional and financial consequences of vehicle/pedestrian collisions. A collision between a motor vehicle and pedestrian can have life-altering consequences, which is why it is so important for both drivers and pedestrians to pay attention.
“Intersection safety is everyone’s responsibility. CRISP is committed to raising awareness on the seriousness of intersection collisions and how you can protect yourself and others from serious injury, “says Boston.
Between 2004 and 2006, the number of vehicle/pedestrian collisions at intersections in the City of Edmonton has steadily risen to more than 225. There were a total of 16 pedestrian fatalities between 2004 and 2006 with a majority of those occurring at intersections. To date in 2007, there have been a total of 11 pedestrian fatalities in the City of Edmonton alone.
